Previously known as *Cosmic Sans Neue Mono*. It
appeared that [similar names were already in use for other
fonts](https://github.com/belluzj/cosmic-sans-neue/issues/16), and that
people tended to extend their instinctive hatred of Comic Sans to this very
font of mine (which of course can only be *loved*). Why the previous name?
Here is my original explanation:
> The name comes from my realization that at some point it looked like the
> mutant child of Comic Sans and Helvetica Neue. Hopefully it is not the
> case any more.
Inspirational sources include Inconsolata and Monaco. I have also been using
Consolas a lot in my programming life, so it may have some points in common.

Weights, variants and glyph coverage
------------------------------------
The font includes a bold version, with the same metrics as the regular one.
Both versions include the same ranges of characters : latin letters, some
accented glyphs (quite a lot), some greek letters, some arrows.
Please note that I have not tested all of the glyphs I have drawn (some letters
have those two layers of crazy accents that I have never witnessed before), so
it might look bad in some cases. Please report these problems: see next section.
It also features a good italic version, which I designed in a fashion similar
to Consolas' italic version, with new glyph designs, not just an added slant.

Installation
------------
You can [download the latest version](https://github.com/belluzj/fantasque-sans/releases/latest)
and install it by hand. In the `NoLoopK` variant, the looped lowercase `k` is
replaced with a straight version. The `LargeLineHeight` variant is especially
useful for users of accented capitals. For more info, see the [CHANGELOG](CHANGELOG.md).
Automatic installation on macOS with [homebrew](https://brew.sh):
brew tap homebrew/cask-fonts #You only need to do this once for cask-fonts
brew install --cask font-fantasque-sans-mono
Instructions for other platforms might follow.
Building installable font files
-------------------------------
The build process requires:
* FontForge with python scripting support,
* `ttfautohint`
* `sfnt2woff` (from the `woff-tools` package on Ubuntu)
* `woff2_compress` from [the Google WOFF2
tools](https://github.com/google/woff2) or `woff2` package on Ubuntu
Run `make`. You should see green stuff and some "OK" messages.
If you are using Ubuntu, please note that the FontForge version
in the default Ubuntu repositories is much outdated at the time of this writing,
and that [is known to have caused subtle problems](https://github.com/belluzj/fantasque-sans/issues/59).
You are advised to install FontForge from
[this PPA](https://launchpad.net/~fontforge/+archive/ubuntu/fontforge)
(using `sudo add-apt-repository ppa:fontforge/fontforge` prior to the installation).
Alternatively, you can always [download](https://github.com/belluzj/fantasque-sans/releases/latest)
the latest prebuilt release of these fonts.
`make install` will install the TTF fonts into your local `.fonts/` directory
and update the font cache. It comes in handy while modifying the font.

### A typeface designed for source code
Hack is designed to be a workhorse typeface for source code. It has deep roots in the free, open source typeface community and expands upon the contributions of the [Bitstream Vera](https://www.gnome.org/fonts/) & [DejaVu](http://dejavu-fonts.org/wiki/Main_Page) projects. The large x-height + wide aperture + low contrast design make it legible at commonly used source code text sizes with a sweet spot that runs in the 8 - 14 range. The full set of changes to the upstream source are available in the [changelog](CHANGELOG.md).
The project is in active development, and we welcome your input and contributions. You may view our design objectives and instructions on how to contribute in [CONTRIBUTING.md](CONTRIBUTING.md).

**NOTE ON FONT UPDATES**
*If you are updating your version of Hack, be sure to remove the previously installed version and clear your font cache first to avoid conflicts that can lead to platform-specific rendering errors. Many platforms/distros offer package managers that automate this process. We release a Windows installer to automate the install/update process on the Windows platform. See below for additional details.*
### Linux

1. Download the [latest version of Hack][ttf_latest].
2. Extract the files from the archive (`.zip`).
3. Copy the font files to either your system font folder (often `/usr/share/fonts/`) or user font folder (often `~/.local/share/fonts/` or `/usr/local/share/fonts`).
4. Copy the font configuration file in `config/fontconfig/` to either the system font configuration folder (often `/etc/fonts/conf.d/`) or the font user folder (often `~/.config/fontconfig/conf.d`)
5. Clear and regenerate your font cache and indexes with the following command:

## Package managers
We highly recommend the convenience of a community developed package manager or other auto-updating utility if this is available on your platform. While the package manager releases may be a bit delayed relative to the repository releases, the packages distributed through these package managers were designed to tune and automate font installs and updates on your system.
We are aware of Hack support in the following package managers (with associated package names):
- **Arch Linux**: `ttf-hack`
- **Chocolatey (Windows)**: `hackfont`
- **Debian**: `fonts-hack-ttf`
- **Fedora / CentOS**: `dnf-plugins-core :: heliocastro/hack-fonts :: hack-fonts`
- **Gentoo Linux**: `media-fonts/hack`
- **Homebrew Cask (OS X)**: `caskroom/fonts/font-hack`
- **Open BSD**: `fonts/hack-fonts`
- **OpenSUSE**: `hack-fonts`
- **Ubuntu**: `fonts-hack-ttf`
- **Visual Studio Package Manager**: `hack.font`
For installation issues with Hack packages, please contact the package maintainer directly.
## Web font usage
Hack is available in the woff and woff2 web font formats. **Bold** and *italic* styles are included by default and work out-of-the-box via the `<strong>` and `<em>` tags.
Hack is available through the jsDelivr and cdnjs CDN services:
[![jsDelivr](https://img.shields.io/badge/jsDelivr-Hack_web_font_CDN-blue.svg?style=flat-square)](https://www.jsdelivr.com/package/npm/hack-font)
[![cdnjs](https://img.shields.io/badge/cdnjs-Hack_web_font_CDN-blue.svg?style=flat-square)](https://cdnjs.com/libraries/hack-font)
The following snippets provide examples of Hack web font use through the jsDelivr CDN. Adjust the URL paths to those provided by cdnjs (click the link above to find the appropriate URL) to switch to the cdnjs CDN.
#### 1. Add Hack to HTML
Include one of the following in the <head> section of your HTML file:
**Subset web fonts**
```html
<link rel="stylesheet" href="//cdn.jsdelivr.net/npm/hack-font@3/build/web/hack-subset.css">
```
**Full character set web fonts**
```html
<link rel="stylesheet" href="//cdn.jsdelivr.net/npm/hack-font@3/build/web/hack.css">
```
#### 2. Add Hack to CSS
```css
pre, code { font-family: Hack, monospace; }
```
See the [WEBFONT_USAGE.md](docs/WEBFONT_USAGE.md) documentation for additional details, including instructions on how to download, host, and serve the web fonts on your web server.
## Additional tools for Hack font customization
### Customize your build with alternate glyph styles
The [alt-hack](https://github.com/source-foundry/alt-hack) library includes a (growing) collection of alternate glyph styles that can be used to customize your Hack fonts. Don't like the default zero style? Swap out the UFO design source with a slashed zero or dotted zero and build new fonts that work better for you.
We welcome contributions of new alternate glyph styles in the alt-hack repository. Design something new that works well with rest of the typeface and submit a pull request to the alt-hack repository so that others can use it in their custom builds.
Detailed build instructions are available on the [alt-hack repository README.md](https://github.com/source-foundry/alt-hack). Font renaming instructions to support side-by-side installs with upstream Hack are available below.
### Line spacing adjustments
[font-line](https://github.com/source-foundry/font-line) is a tool that modifies the default line spacing used in the Hack design (20% UPM).
The following gist installs font-line and modifies line spacing for all desktop font files contained in the same directory:
- [linespace.sh](https://gist.github.com/chrissimpkins/f39e85f5f157d839e46168de1b61a174) ([download .zip](https://gist.github.com/chrissimpkins/f39e85f5f157d839e46168de1b61a174/archive/f3f93dea87d64ddc4684a61cbc96ddf79d30824a.zip))
### Install modified and unmodified versions of Hack on the same system
If you modify the upstream Hack source or the released font binaries and would like to install your modified fonts on the same system with the Hack fonts as released here, you can use the [fontname.py Python script](https://github.com/chrissimpkins/fontname.py) to define a new font name in the binary files. For example, you can install `Hack` on your platform along with a 15% UPM line spacing adjusted version as `Hack Fifteen`. Modify default glyphs with those in our [alt-hack repository](https://github.com/source-foundry/alt-hack) or design your own and define your creation with any name that you'd like. Following installation, your renamed fonts should show under the name that you define with the script so that you can switch between any of them as you need.
Usage details and examples are provided on the fontname.py repository README.

## Acknowledgments
We would like to acknowledge and thank the [jsDelivr](https://www.jsdelivr.com/) and [cdnjs](https://cdnjs.com) teams for their support of the Hack project through their free web font CDN services. We greatly appreciate the tremendous support of open source software development by the [Semaphore CI](https://semaphoreci.com/) team. Their free CI testing service and rapid, excellent technical support have been tremendous assets for our project. Lastly, a huge thanks go out to all of those who do the unrecognized work to get Hack out there to users so that it is easy to access, install, upgrade, and use. There are redistribution package managers, review committee members, testers, and others across platforms/distros/applications who perform this thankless work and often go unrecognized. Your efforts are much appreciated.

# Hasklig
### Hasklig – _Ligatures for code_
Font with ligatures for programming (in Haskell) forked from [Source Code Pro](https://github.com/adobe-fonts/source-code-pro).
Programming languages are limited to relatively few characters. As a result, combined character operators surfaced quite early, such as the widely used arrow (`->`), comprised of a hyphen and greater sign. It looks like an arrow if you know the analogy and squint a bit.
For more information have a look at the upstream website: https://github.com/i-tu/Hasklig
Composite glyphs are problematic in languages such as Haskell which utilize these complicated operators (`=>` `-<` `>>=` etc.) extensively. The readability of such complex code improves with pretty printing. Academic articles featuring Haskell code often use [lhs2tex](https://www.andres-loeh.de/lhs2tex/) to achieve an appealing rendering, but it is of no use when programming.
Some Haskellers have resorted to Unicode symbols (`⇒`, `←` _etc._), which are valid in the <span style="font-variant: small-caps">ghc</span>. However they are one-character-wide and therefore eye-strainingly small. Furthermore, when displayed as substitutes to the underlying multi-character representation, as [vim2hs](https://github.com/dag/vim2hs) does, the characters go out of alignment.
Hasklig solves the problem the way typographers have always solved ill-fitting characters which co-occur often: [ligatures](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Typographic_ligature). The underlying code stays the same — only the representation changes.
Not only can multi-character glyphs be rendered more vividly, other problematic things in monospaced fonts, such as spacing can be corrected.

### Building the fonts from source
#### Requirements
To build the binary font files from source, you need to have installed the
[Adobe Font Development Kit for OpenType](http://www.adobe.com/devnet/opentype/afdko.html) (AFDKO). The AFDKO
tools are widely used for font development today, and are part of most font
editor applications.
Some SVG glyphs are inserted into the fonts using Python [FontTools](https://pypi.python.org/pypi/FontTools).
#### Building font instances from masters
This repository only includes so-called *master* weights of the fonts (effectively extralight and black).
The shapes of the weights in between these extremities are calculated by `makeInstancesUFO` supplied with `.designspace` files.
For convenience, the shell script **buildInstances** is provided, which executes `makeInstancesUFO`, calculating all the italic and regular font weight shapes.
```sh
$ ./buildInstances.sh
```
#### Building one font
The key to building OTF or TTF fonts is `makeotf`, which is part of the AFDKO toolset.
Information and usage instructions can be found by executing `makeotf -h`.
In this repository, all necessary files are in place for building the OTF and TTF fonts.
For example, build a binary OTF font for the Regular style like this:
```sh
$ cd Roman/Regular/
$ makeotf -r
```
#### Building all fonts
For convenience, a shell script named **build** is provided in the root directory.
It builds all OTFs and TTFs, and can be executed by typing:
```sh
$ ./build.sh
```
or this on Windows:
```sh
> build.cmd
```

### Ligatures
https://github.com/googlefonts/Inconsolata
Inconsolata includes ligatures for a few JavaScript operators:
They are available in two families.
- **"Inconsolata"** exposes the ligatures as `dlig`. These are disabled by default, and probably won't show up in your editor. You can enable them in CSS with this rule:
```css
font-variant-ligatures: discretionary-ligatures;
```
- **"Ligconsolata"** exposes the ligatures as `liga`. These are enabled by default. This is the family you should use in your text editor.
Note: the Ligconsolata variant has not yet been upgraded to version 3.000, as we're prioritizing the non-ligature variants.
## Building the family
Family is built using Glyphs, fontmake and gftools post processing script. Tools are all python based.
To install all the Python tools into a virtualenv, do the following:
```
python3 -m venv venv
source venv/bin/activate
pip install -r requirements.txt
```
To build the fonts we must load sources/Inconsolata-vf.glyphs in Glyphs and do the following:
- Run the decompose-transformed-components.py script
- Run the gen_instances.py script
- Run the inco_fix.py script
- Save the file back in the sources directory with the filename "prod.glyphs"
We can now run the build script in the terminal:
```
cd sources # script needs to be run from sources dir
sh build.sh
```
Fonts will take approximately 25 minutes to build.
## Changelog v.3.000
Upgrade to 2-axis variable font family, with widths from 50 to 200, and weights from 200 to 900.

## Inconsolata Build Instructions
Inconsolata fonts can be built using either export from Glyphs or using [fontmake]. The font files committed to this repo are done using fontmake.
### Source Files
Inconsolata source files are available in `.glyphs` format located in the `/sources` directory.
### Adding ligatures
1. Follow the ["Creating the ligature"](https://glyphsapp.com/tutorials/ligatures) section of the Glyphs ligatures tutorial.
2. Name your new glyph with the suffix `.dlig`, for instance `bar_greater.dlig`.
3. Open the _Font Info_ panel.
1. Switch to the _Features_ tab.
2. Click _dlig_ in the sidebar.
3. Click the _Update_ button at the bottom of the panel.
4. Switch to the _Instances_ tab.
5. Update the _Rename Glyphs_ value for "Ligconsolata Regular" to include a new line for your new glyph, for instance:
```
bar_greater.dlig=bar_greater.liga
```
6. Update the _Rename Glyphs_ value for "Ligconsolata Bold".
4. Export the font, as explained below.
### Exporting a variable font using fontmake
It's possible to export the project as a single variable font. It's just a bit tricky, because the font uses components with varying 2x2 components, triggering a [bug](https://github.com/googlefonts/fontmake/issues/595) which is present in both [fontmake] and Glyphs export. Thus, there's an inco_fix.py script in the sources directory that detects this case and decomposes just those components. Run that script before exporting. The script also decomposes corner components, which makes the resulting `glyphs` file suitable for fontmake export as well (fontmake currently has no support for corner components).
You can copy the script into the Scripts folder for Glyphs, which will make it available in the Script menu, or you can just copy it into the Macro Panel.
After running the script, the following fontmake invocation will generate a variable font:
```
fontmake -g sources/Inconsolata-vf.glyphs -o variable
```
This is the version in the fonts/ directory, as it is slightly smaller than the version generated by Glyphs.
We do not check the *result* of the inco_fix script into version control, as we want to preserve editability. It's entirely possible that a future version of fontmake (or Glyphs itself) will be able to handle the source file without running a script.
### Exporting instances using fontmake
The source file contains 15 instances, including all weights of the normal (100) width, and also all masters. This is a reasonable complement for working on the font. Run the gen_instances.py script to generate a total of 72 instances; all combinations of the weights from 200 to 900, and widths 50, 70, 80, 90, 110, 120, 150, and 200.
There are two other instances for Ligconsolata, and fontmake will attempt to generate those, but the "Rename Glyphs" custom parameter doesn't seem to be respected by fontmake, so these won't have ligatures enabled. Use the Glyphs export instead (detailed below).
Then run this command to generate OTF:
```
fontmake -g sources/Inconsolata-vf.glyphs -i -o otf
```
And this command to generate autohinted TTF:
```
fontmake -g sources/Inconsolata-vf.glyphs -i -o ttf -a
```
These are the versions in the fonts/ directory.
### Font Export options (from Glyphs)
This is the preferred way to generate the Ligconsolata instances, but
* TTF and OTF files should be exported into `/fonts/ttf` and `/fonts/otf` folders.
* `TTFs` should be generated from Glyphs App with `Autohint` option checked. At the moment there is no custom build script required to produce font files, since default TTFautohinting options suffice.
![Font Export Options](documentation/font-export.png)
* `OTFs` should be generated with these options:
* [X] Remove Overlap
* [X] Autohint
* [ ] Save as TTF
* [X] Export destination: $REPO_PATH/fonts/otf
### Future work
In addition, we want to export a subset not including Vietnamese script coverage, to avoid over-large line spacing on older applications (such as terminals and text editors) that don't understand the "use typo metrics" flag (see https://github.com/googlefonts/Inconsolata/issues/35).
## Glyphstool
The repository also contains some Rust code to manipulate Glyphs format masters, in the `glyphstool` subdirectory. This was used to apply global transforms (mostly as a starting point for the width work). Perhaps the most valuable aspect is that it contains a fairly complete set of line and box drawing primitives, inspired by [Source Code Pro] but with actually variable weight and width. It's not particularly polished or well documented, but is provided for completeness, and it's possible that it could be adapted to future tools that work with font data in the Glyphs format. The code is licensed under Apache 2.0 or MIT, in keeping with the Rust tradition.

README
======
Places I've officially uploaded the latest stable versions to are [dafont.com](http://dafont.com/open-dyslexic.font) and gumroad(see link at [opendyslexic.org](http://opendyslexic.org).)
The latest version may not always be the best version. If you want a stable version, check [github](https://github.com/antijingoist/open-dyslexic/tags) for the latest stable or working beta including otf's and ttf's, or [DaFont](http://dafont.com/open-dyslexic.font) for a stable otf.
If you are upgrading your copy of this font, you may want to remove previous version first.
Typeface/font to help readability, and help readability for some of the symptoms of dyslexia.
Your brain can sometimes do funny things to letters. OpenDyslexic tries to help prevent some of these things from happening. Letters have heavy weighted bottoms to provide an indication of orientation to make it more difficult to confuse with other similar letters. Consistently weighted bottoms can also help reenforce the line of text. The unique shapes of each letter can help prevent flipping and swapping.
The italic style for OpenDyslexic has been crafted still be able to be used for emphasis while still being readable.
Install:
========
Windows: Copy .OTF files to C:\Windows\Fonts
MacOSX: Drag font files to Font Book, and click install

It is based on Bitstream Vera Sans because of the nice license it has.
OpenDyslexic is not packaged by me as an .exe file. It is packaged as a zip file, with no installer, so you know what you are getting.

If you were compelled to pay for this font, ask for a refund. This font is provided at no charge. Donations are cool, but optional. :)

PREAMBLE
The goals of the Open Font License (OFL) are to stimulate worldwide

development of collaborative font projects, to support the font creation

efforts of academic and linguistic communities, and to provide a free and

with others.

The OFL allows the licensed fonts to be used, studied, modified and

fonts, including any derivative works, can be bundled, embedded,

redistributed and/or sold with any software provided that any reserved

names are not used by derivative works. The fonts and derivatives,

however, cannot be released under any other type of license. The

requirement for fonts to remain under this license does not apply

to any document created using the fonts or their derivatives.

SIL OPEN FONT LICENSE Version 1.1 - 26 February 2007

PREAMBLE
The goals of the Open Font License (OFL) are to stimulate worldwide
development of collaborative font projects, to support the font creation
efforts of academic and linguistic communities, and to provide a free and
open framework in which fonts may be shared and improved in partnership
with others.
The OFL allows the licensed fonts to be used, studied, modified and
redistributed freely as long as they are not sold by themselves. The
fonts, including any derivative works, can be bundled, embedded,
redistributed and/or sold with any software provided that any reserved
names are not used by derivative works. The fonts and derivatives,
however, cannot be released under any other type of license. The
requirement for fonts to remain under this license does not apply
to any document created using the fonts or their derivatives.
DEFINITIONS
"Font Software" refers to the set of files released by the Copyright
Holder(s) under this license and clearly marked as such. This may
include source files, build scripts and documentation.
"Reserved Font Name" refers to any names specified as such after the
copyright statement(s).
"Original Version" refers to the collection of Font Software components as
distributed by the Copyright Holder(s).
"Modified Version" refers to any derivative made by adding to, deleting,
or substituting -- in part or in whole -- any of the components of the
Original Version, by changing formats or by porting the Font Software to a
new environment.
"Author" refers to any designer, engineer, programmer, technical
writer or other person who contributed to the Font Software.
PERMISSION & CONDITIONS
Permission is hereby granted, free of charge, to any person obtaining
a copy of the Font Software, to use, study, copy, merge, embed, modify,
redistribute, and sell modified and unmodified copies of the Font
Software, subject to the following conditions:
1) Neither the Font Software nor any of its individual components,
in Original or Modified Versions, may be sold by itself.
2) Original or Modified Versions of the Font Software may be bundled,
redistributed and/or sold with any software, provided that each copy

contains the above copyright notice and this license. These can be

included either as stand-alone text files, human-readable headers or
in the appropriate machine-readable metadata fields within text or
binary files as long as those fields can be easily viewed by the user.
3) No Modified Version of the Font Software may use the Reserved Font
Name(s) unless explicit written permission is granted by the corresponding
Copyright Holder. This restriction only applies to the primary font name as
presented to the users.
4) The name(s) of the Copyright Holder(s) or the Author(s) of the Font
Software shall not be used to promote, endorse or advertise any
Modified Version, except to acknowledge the contribution(s) of the
Copyright Holder(s) and the Author(s) or with their explicit written
permission.
5) The Font Software, modified or unmodified, in part or in whole,
