The warning is printed with loglevel error because the output
stream is known to be broken.
Also warn if no channel layout was provided for multichannel input.
None of these symbols should be accessed directly, so declare them as
hidden.

also are 1 byte in size.

documentation in the @file block refers to a file different from the
one the block resides in.
